Andrea Haandrikman-Schraets’ artistic work often begins in nature — during long-distance walks across Europe and beyond, such as the 88-temple route in Japan.
These journeys, offering space for reflection and creative development, form the starting point for new ideas.
The impressions gathered outdoors are brought back into the studio, where they are further developed. Themes that emerge from this process include storytelling, a search for insight, and the contrasts inherent in nature.
Her perspective on nature is shaped by a unique combination of textures and materials — both natural and man-made.
By rethinking how materials interact, she creates unexpected compositions and tactile contrasts.
Her work is marked by a balance between the rough and the refined, the opaque and the transparent.
Andrea’s art practice is rooted in traditional acrylic painting, but it expands into a wide range of mixed media approaches — resulting in a body of work that is both experimental and deeply connected to the natural world.
Free little birds is part of the Kunst-O-Maat project, Gemeente Eijsden-Margraten.
A series of 33 Miniatures inspired by species of birds living in de gemeente Eijsden-Margraten.
All 35 birds are all crafted differently, but framed and embroidered in the same way. The birds are partially transparent and freely embroidered using various types of metal wire. Each bird is unique, shaped from fabric and acrylic paint.
